Local Artist Has Work in Smithsonian Exhibition
March 30th, 2008
Megan Coyle, a graduate of T.C. Williams and a more recent graduate of Elon
University, currently has a work of art hanging in the Smithsonian’s Ripley Center. Last
summer, Megan worked as an intern at the National Portrait Gallery. It was there that
she heard about a juried exhibition that was open to Smithsonian employees, and for
the first time it was open to interns and volunteers. She submitted one of her collage
portraits, and a couple months later she heard that she was accepted into the exhibition,
“Artists at Work: The Smithsonian Community Art Show 2008.”
The exhibition was installed on March 20th, and was expected to remain in the Ripley
Center for only a couple of months. However, it has been extended until July 27th,
2008. The exhibition features the work of Smithsonian employees, interns, and
volunteers, and the work consists of a variety of media, including color pencil,
photography, mixed media illustrations, and sculpture.
For Megan, this has been a big step for her as an artist—having her work on display in
such a public area. Beforehand, most of the exhibitions her artwork appeared in were
around Elon University’s campus.
